2 Nephi 3 is an amazing chapter with some glorious prophesy. I only counted up 18 flag phrases in the 25 verses, but holy wow! I love digging into the meat of this chapter and am looking forward to the next chapter knowing that I get to try and really understand Nephi’s psalm.
Sticking with chapter 3 though…. Lehi is speaking to his youngest son Joseph that was born in the wilderness after the family had left Jerusalem. He tells of Joseph of old, remember him all the way back from Genesis 37? Joseph, Lehi’s son is given a blessing that the Lord will bless him forever and that his seed will never be destroyed off the face of the earth. This sounds a little silly reading it in our day, but in ancient times I imagine this being a great promise. Joseph of old is an ancestor to Lehi, we learned this back in 1 Nephi. Therefore, all of Lehi’s children are descendants of Joseph of old.
We then learn that Joseph of old was told by Heavenly Father that a seer would be raised up out of his seed and that he will be given commandments to do work of great worth unto his seed and that this work is the only work that he shall do. He will do God’s work and he will be like Moses and not speak well, but he will write and these writings will convince men of God’s word (the Book of Mormon).
Lehi tells his son Joseph what Joseph of old shared: that this man that will be a seer and writer of the Gods word will be named after Joseph of old and also after his own father, from this we can see that Joseph Smith, Junior fills this prophesy. We then learn that the words that Joseph Smith will write will be wisdom of God. Do you think of your scriptures like that, as wisdom of God? Wisdom written by our Father in Heaven. A great point to ponder, at least I think so.
I love verse 24 which reads: “And there shall rise up one mighty among them, who shall do much good, both in word and in deed, bring an instrument in the hands of God, with exceeding faith, to work mighty wonders, and do that thing which is great in the sight of God, unto the bringing to pass much restoration unto the house of Israel, and unto the seed of thy brethren.”
I love verse 24 because it is true and simple and clear.
Next up is Nephi’s psalm. I hope that I can learn and learn. I write this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
