As Alma turned the speaking over to Amulek in Alma 10, we learn of the family tree of Amulek. We learn that Amulek has a direct link in his family lineage to the tribe of Manasseh who is the son of Joseph of old. Furthermore, Amulek explains who he is within the circle of acquaintances that he has and learn that he is well known and has a solid reputation as a good businessman. Amulek then begins to share his testimony to the people in Ammonihah.
Envision that you are in his shoes: Amulek is a well reputed businessman telling the people that he knows and strangers alike that he has seen an angel of the Lord and that he has learned of the mysteries of God. He shares his story of how he met Alma and that he welcomed him into his home as instructed bu the angel. Following this, he recognized that his whole family and business were blessed because of him following the counsel of the angel.
Once Amulek shared this small portion of his testimony, the people of Ammonihah were “astonished, seeing there was more than one witness who testified of the things whereof they were accused, and also of the things which were to come, according to the spirit of prophecy which was in them.” (verse 12) With the bearing of testimony, there were of course nonbelievers and these were men that were leaders in the community and were out to make money, these men are called lawyers and described as being cunning people. The lawyers began to question Amulek in an attempt to get him to contradict himself. I can totally see myself in this position. I believe that many of us Latter-day Saints are afraid of sharing our testimony in public because of this fear. Amulek had the Holy Spirit with him and did not counter himself, and only further explained the workings and the Lord and told the people of their need to repent so that they are not destroyed in their iniquity. As Amulek called these people as they were, they grew more angry and claimed that he was a man of the devil.
At the end of this chapter we are introduced to a lawyer of the group, who was the “foremost to accuse Amulek and Alma” (verse 31) named Zeezrom. And this is the end of chapter 10, but this story is yet to end, stay tuned.
I leave this with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
