I find that this chapter has a few tidbits for me to take away, but I don’t find it overly enthusing…. sorry, I’m just being upfront. That being said, here are my thoughts on Alma 11.
There is a lot of information at the beginning of this chapter that make it not enjoyable for me. One can learn of the set up of Nephite currency from the beginning of the chapter through verse 19. The point of this information is so that we understand how much Zeezrom is offering Amulek to deny God. Zeezrom offered Amulek a great deal of silver (six onties) if he would deny the existence of God. Amulek firmly stood his ground, and the Spirit held him fast in his place so that he was able to put Zeezrom in his place. With the Holy Ghost allowing Amulek and Alma to know the desires of the hearts of the men that they faced, Amulek told Zeezrom that he knows that even if he denied God, that Zeezrom was going to not pay Amulek anyway.
What we do learn, that I love in this chapter are the direct questions and answers found in verses 26-33. We discover that there is only one God, that He is true and living and that Amulek can testify of this because an angel has let him know of it. We also learn of Christ from Amulek here and that He is indeed the Son of God.
The next question that Zeezrom asks of Amulek if Christ will save the people in their sins. This answer to this question seems to make Zeezrom happy… at first because Amulek says that Jesus Christ will not save all men in their sins. Amulek clarifies his answer and explains that no man will be saved in their sin. Men can only be saved through Jesus Christ if they believe on him. I know that my husband (who doesn’t read my blog and is going bald loves some of the following verses) where we learn that after our temporal death “the spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its perfect form; both limb and joint shall be restored to its proper frame, even as we now are at this time; and we shall be brought to stand before God, knowing even as we know now, and have a bright recollection of all our guilt. Now this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil.” (verse 43-44)
I love this explanation of the God head and how Amulek is able to explain himself clearly to Zeezrom and others that have come to hear upon his words. This chapter wraps up with the people being in awe of the words that Amulek has shared and they begin to tremble at his words.
Stay tuned for more of the story…..
I leave this with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
