Temple Attendance

My heart is full as I sit down to write this morning.  It has been a long time since I have attended the temple, far too long.  I keep telling myself that I am going to get there, and then I don’t.  I have read several talks by General Authorities from the church this week while doing my studies and it is clear, Heavenly Father is calling me back to the temple.

As I read through talks by Elders Bruce R. McConkie, Bruce C. Hafen, D. Todd Christofferson, David A. Bednar, and President Boyd K. Packer what stood out the most to me this week is a quote that I just ran into from Elder Quentin L. Cook who said: “Living and maintaining temple-worthy lives will hold together all that really matters.”

And so it is.  I will be returning.  I will strive with everything I have to attend the temple regularly and not only when it’s convenient.  I love Jesus Christ, our Savior and Heavenly Father who has blessed me with everything I have.

Get your temple recommend, get to the temple.  No excuses.  Portland Temple.1

Mothers

With all that moms do each and every day, a lot of which goes unrecognized, unrewarded, and is thankless, I would like to take a moment to share with you how important moms really are.  Now, I know that this is my opinion, but I just want you to remember that each of these tiny actions of good amount to a while lot in the eyes of our Heavenly Father.  Nurturing and teaching our beloved children and caring for our spouses is part of our Heavenly Father’s plan.  Being mothers, is who you as a woman, are meant to be.  While being a mother may not be part of your earthly plan, or even be possible for you in this mortal realm, each woman has the potential to be a mom in His kingdom one day.  Take a moment and watch this video from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and realize what it really means.

With love,
Samantha

Family and Exercise

At the beginning of this week, in my Fundamentals of Religion: The Eternal Family course, I was instructed to make a plan for what I was going to do regarding being more healthy.  As I have been currently contemplating the extra chub that I have put around my belly, I knew that it was time to get motivated to do something about it.

During FHE this week, my husband led the way and had each of us make an exercise plan to put into action.  My older girls made one specifically for the summer break that is coming up so that they don’t get lazy and out of shape.  They both felt horrible when school started up last year because they hadn’t been working out regularly over the summer.  I made my plan and beginning on Tuesday, I started exercising again.

My quads are on fire, my upper abs are killing me, but I know that if I keep going, and sweating and moving, that chub that is around my middle will dwindle.  And that, is my goal.  I know that Heavenly Father gave me this body to care for it to the best of my ability, my body is my temple and I need to remember that each and everyday…. perhaps the quad pain every time I sit down will help with that.

Please take a moment and watch this video and to help keep in mind why exercise is so important… it’s not just about having that “perfect body.”

Have a great weekend!

The Eternal Family

It’s been a month since I have last written anything here and it’s flown by.  I miss my blog.  We shall see how this goes with a new twist.  As you know, if you’ve been following, I had previously been documenting my readings from scripture study of the Book of Mormon.  The semesters have since concluded and I am now in a new term taking Fundamentals of Religion: The Eternal Family through the Pathway Program.  For a term long project, I have chosen to share here, on my blog, at least twice a week for the remainder of the term information and thoughts, impressions, feelings, and whatever else springs to mind as I write regarding marriage and family.  The focus of The Eternal Family course is The Family: A Proclamation to the World which was presented in 1995 by President Gordon B. Hinckley.  So that you know going in, there are some topics that will be covered that are controversial.  That being said, I have been brought to know through the power of the Holy Ghost that what was written by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve is true.  I believe this in my heart and this is why I am sharing it with you.  I do hope that you will ponder the things that I write and share over the course of the next couple of months.  Without further delay, here is The Family: A Proclamation to the World.

The Family

A Proclamation to the World

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.

Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.
